Spotify launches new family plan header image

Does your family enjoy streaming music online? If so, you may be interested in a new offering that has been launched by Spotify.

The music streaming service has created a new family plan, which allows family members to share an account, but keep their playlists, recommendations and other preferences completely separate.

Up to five people can be added to Spotify Family and the total cost of the package is significantly cheaper than if each of these people signed up the company's premium service independently. Indeed, the overall saving amounts to around 50 per cent per person.

Spotify chief content officer Ken Parks revealed the family plan is "one of the most asked for features from our audience". The new offering is expected to become available in the UK some time within the next few weeks.

Earlier this year, Spotify revealed it has ten million paid subscribers and more than 40 million active users covering 56 different markets across the globe. However, the Guardian has reported that music industry sources believe this figure has grown to 50 million. 

Streaming via the internet is increasingly becoming the norm when it comes to listening to music. According to the British Phonographic Industry, the amount of songs being streamed in the UK has nearly doubled in 2014 so far, rising from 5.4 billion to 10.2 billion. This equates to 160 streams for every single person in the country.

British artists are also leading the way, as Spotify has revealed they account for 19 per cent of songs listened to on the service. Coldplay, One Direction, Florence + the Machine, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, Lily Allen, Mumford & Sons, Ed Sheeran and Calvin Harris were cited as some of the most popular UK acts.

Kevin Brown, Spotify’s head of label relations for Europe, stated: "This huge market share is testament both to the incredible home-grown talent we have here, and the ability Spotify offers to artists to share their music and build audiences of engaged music fans all over the world."
