New research has shown people in the UK are increasingly using their broadband connections to shop online.
The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index have revealed online sales grew 18 per cent in August compared to the same month one year earlier - the greatest year-on-year rise recorded since November 2013. Some £8.1 billion was spent over the internet during the month.
Andrew McClelland, chief policy and operations officer at IMRG, stated: "Overall index growth of 18 per cent sees us on target to exceed the earlier expectations of growth for 2014. A £100 billion year is certain to be exceeded in 2014."
Alex Smith-Bingham, vice-president and digital services leader at Capgemini, added: "August's results revealed a real spark in the confidence of the British consumer, with an increase in spend on clothing accessories, such as sandals and other holiday essentials."
According to the e-Retail Sales Index, online clothing sales increased 20 per cent in August, which is double the annual growth that was recorded in the two preceding months. The accessories sector, meanwhile, saw a rise of 60 per cent year on year, with this attributed to people buying products for their summer holidays. Another strong performer was electricals, with online sales in the space up 19 per cent.
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have also demonstrated the rising popularity of internet-based shopping. The organisation found the total amount spent online increased 8.3 per cent year on year in August. Internet sales accounted for more than one in ten (11 per cent) of the total retail purchases made throughout the month.
The ONS revealed an average of £707.7 million was spent online each week during August. It also found the clothing sector did particularly well, with a 27.3 per cent increase recorded in this space year on year. Some 11.8 per cent of clothing, footwear and textiles purchases were made over the web last month.
