Some 231 million viewing requests were made on BBC iPlayer in July, figures from the broadcaster show.
The closing stages of the World Cup contributed heavily to this figure, with the final three games of the football tournament making it into the list of the 20 most-requested TV programmes during the month.
Brazil and Germany's semi-final clash attracted 1.2 million requests alone, making it the second most popular programme in July, the BBC said.
According to the broadcaster, 15 per cent of the viewing requests made on the service were to watch a programme live.
BBC Two drama The Honourable Woman was the most popular show, generating 1.3 million requests over the course of the month.
The BBC said iPlayer use is most common in people under the age of 55, with a relatively even split between men and women.
Use of the service is generally consistent with normal TV time-wise, although more people tend to use iPlayer during the daytime and later at night.
