With more and more people having access to fast satellite broadband connections, there is no doubt the UK is quickly becoming a digital society.
This is providing massive opportunities for businesses, particularly those that have their finger on the pulse.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), companies that make full use of social media are saving significant sums of money on recruitment and knowledge sharing.
The organisation is hosting a conference next month, which will highlight how sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have changed the way people interact and what impact this is having on enterprises.
A statement by the group said: "The CIPD Social Media in HR conference will explore how HR professionals are using social media to create a more connected and engaged workforce."
Developments such as social media are helping more firms to introduce flexible working arrangements and O2 recently revealed that nearly two-thirds of businesses expect an extra 30 per cent of their workforce to become mobile in the next two years.
