New figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that online sales are on the up across the UK, with an increasing number of people using the internet to purchase goods and services.
Despite the difficult economic conditions facing many Britons, online sales increased by 11 per cent in October 2012 on a year-on-year basis, moving up to £562 million overall.
Retail has been relatively flat in the UK over the last five years, with online becoming a crucial part of the market.
The amount spent online was estimated to make up 9.4 per cent of all retail spending excluding petrol sales, indicating the growing importance of ecommerce to consumers in the UK.
Food sales carried out over the internet jumped by 15.6 per cent, while the textile, clothing footwear market expanded by an impressive 22.2 per cent.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, social media is having a positive impact for businesses that know how to utilise it effectively.
