The internet has revolutionised the way in which people buy and listen to music, with downloading and streaming taking precedence over CDs.
Now, new research from the Official Charts Company and Radio One has revealed the UK's 100 most downloaded songs of all time.
Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, which features T.I and Pharrell Williams, topped the chart with 1.54 million downloads since its release in May last year.
The US singer knocked Adele off top spot - the singer's record Someone Like You was previously the country's most downloaded track, but is now second with 1.53 million online purchases.
Commenting on the news, Thicke said: "I'm so honoured, the success of Blurred Lines is a dream come true."
Martin Talbot, Official Charts Company chief executive, stated: "To become one of only two tracks to have been downloaded 1.5 million times - and climb to the top of the poll as the biggest download of all time - is an incredible achievement."
A total of 27 songs have now been downloaded more than a million times with the likes of Maroon Five, Daft Punk, Rihanna and Kings of Leon all featuring in the top ten of the most downloaded chart.
The Official Charts Company said a total of 1.17 billion songs have been downloaded since the Official Download Chart was launched in 2004. An additional 153 million albums have also been downloaded in that period.
This amounts to 108 tracks per household or 513 songs being downloaded per minute over the ten years.
Downloads helped the music industry enjoy a strong year in 2013, with British Phonographic Industry figures revealing total revenues of more than £1 billion were generated by the sector. Some 32.6 million albums were downloaded over the 12 months, representing a 100 per cent increase on 2008.
Streaming also saw a massive rise in popularity - a total of 7.4 billion songs were listened to this way in 2013, accounting for ten per cent of total music sales.
