More than a third of people in the UK shop online on a weekly basis.
This is according to a new survey by PwC, which found 37 per cent of Britons buy goods or services over the internet this regularly. Close to two-thirds (64 per cent) of people who make purchases online said they do so to access value-for-money deals.
While Britons are shopping online more and more, the number who do so on a PC is actually falling. PwC found use of traditional computers in e-commerce dropped by seven per cent in 2013 compared to the year before.
This is due to the fact shoppers are now turning to mobile devices like tablets and smartphones to make their purchases. Use of the latter grew by 46 per cent last year, while tablet shopping was up 56 per cent.
The number of people buying things actually in stores continues to fall, dropping by five per cent in 2013.
Matthew Tod, UK retail and digital partner at PwC, commented: "Consumers are choosing the shopping method that suits them best.
"Whilst store decline has been visible for a number of years, it now seems to be the turn of the PC to suffer as consumer shopping behaviour continues to evolve."
The organisation's research revealed more than half (57 per cent) of online shoppers use no more than five different retailers. Trust was highlighted as the key priority in picking a trader by 85 per cent of people.
A high number of shoppers have made a purchase from a retailer in a foreign country, with 33 per cent having done so. Some 83 per cent of these said they made a purchase from abroad because the product they wanted was not available in the UK.
