Online sales hit a record high in December, new figures have revealed.

Statistics from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and KPMG, show the month saw the amount of internet trade rise by 19.2 per cent compared to a year earlier, when it had increased by 18.4 per cent. This is the fastest rate of growth since March 2010.

Helen Dickinson, BRC director general, stated: "As expected, more of us clicked into Christmas than ever before … The surge in the use of tablets and smartphones last year, together with the ever faster delivery times achieved by an increasing number of retailers, have provided a new spur of growth to online shopping."

Online sales accounted for close to 20 per cent of total non-food trade in December and are responsible for around three-quarters of growth in the retail sector.

David McCorquoade, head of retail at KPMG, stated: "With one in five items bought on the internet in December, this really was an online Christmas for the retail sector."

He said the leading online retailers are those who offer "slick" multichannel operations that provide customers with flexibility.

Mr McCorquoade predicted companies that are able to offer same-day delivery at a reasonable price will be the "winners" in 2014.

Ms Dickinson said last year saw retailers invest heavily in their websites and delivery operations and this has contributed to the record performance of the online sector.

Being able to shop online is just one of the many benefits a satellite broadband connection can bring.

This was recently highlighted by Cumbrian family the Turners who have replaced their dial-up connection with an Avonline satellite service. Mother of three Linda Turner told the Northumberland Gazette the change has made a real difference to the whole family and cited being able to shop online as one of the major benefits.

Other advantages she discussed were her children being able to do their homework and the whole family being able to keep in touch with friends and relatives.
