Ofcom rules preventing broadband price hikes come into force header image

New rules protecting broadband customers from unexpected mid-contract price rises have come into force today (January 23rd). 

The regulations have been imposed by telecoms watchdog Ofcom and will allow consumers to exit their contract without penalty if a provider decides to increase the price agreed at point of sale. It will also apply to landline and mobile phone companies. 

If a business does decide to raise its prices, it must give consumers a month's notice in which they are free to leave the contract if they wish.

Providers will also be required to ensure any changes to a contract, pricing or otherwise, must be communicated in a clear and transparent manner.

Claudio Pollack, Ofcom's consumer group director, stated: "We have reached an important milestone in our work to ensure consumers and small businesses have better protection against unexpected price increases."
