Businesses and consumers in Northumberland will benefit from the rollout of superfast broadband, replacing poor ADSL connections and ensuring good access is provided across the county, it has been claimed.
The European Commission recently gave the green light to the UK government's £530 million scheme.
Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith told the News Post Leader that superfast broadband access is crucial to creating a strong economy in the modern world.
"This will create jobs and growth for us in Northumberland and ensure we can compete fairly with the big cities," he added.
Furthermore, it will ensure the government can provide public services using the web and help consumers get access to them, concluded the MP.
iNorthumberland programme director Stephen Gray recently suggested that satellite broadband could be key to the county's online access levels, noting that the unique geography of the area makes it difficult to install fibre infrastructure everywhere.
