Broadband services in Cumbria have been criticised by a local MP.
MP for Barrow and Furness John Woodcock has described connections in his constituency as "prehistorically slow" and a problem for local residents, the North West Evening Mail reports. He was speaking in response to the slow and unreliable broadband services that have affected the Kirkby area in recent weeks and are believed to have been caused by a faulty BT exchange.
"Poor connections are causing real frustration for Kirkby households and are hampering the operation of businesses.
"I am demanding BT provides a firm date to get work at the exchange completed and considers offering compensation," Mr Woodcock told the newspaper.
The MP's comments have been welcomed by local residents who have created a petition to try and convince BT to take action on the issue.
Chris Pudsey, one of the campaigners, stated: "John Woodcock is trying to help give a bit of weight to our problem - hopefully it's going to help and, if it doesn't, we will nag BT further."
The absence of reliable broadband is having a damaging effect on local businesses, with graphic design company Lil' Creative Studio saying it has lost customers as a result of being unable to complete designs online.
This is not the first time Cumbria's lack of connectivity has been highlighted and the county is regarded as having some of the worst internet services in the UK. In June, South Lakes MP Tim Farron hit out at the government and BT after it was revealed parts of his constituency were not included in the initial rollout of super-fast broadband in the region.
Speaking to in-cumbria he described himself as "incredibly angry" and accused the proposals of "failing" the people of south Cumbria.
However, waiting for government intervention is not the only option for residents of Cumbria and other areas blighted by poor connectivity. Satellite broadband can bring high-speed internet to these areas within just a few weeks of an order being placed, click here to learn more.
