Basic errors relating to the way home internet is set up in properties throughout Britain is resulting in thousands of households suffering from broadband speeds that are much slower than they should be.
This is according to new research carried out by analysts for TalkTalk, which revealed some of the most common reasons for poor internet speeds include routers not being connected properly, wiring that is not up to scratch and broadband filters not being replaced.
It was demonstrated that as a result of these mistakes, more than 500,000 British homes are losing around 4 Mbps of broadband speed. Over 100 million megabytes of bandwidth capacity is being leaked by properties on an annual basis - an amount that would be enough to play BBC iPlayer for 59 years non-stop.
Keith Myles, a TalkTalk BrightSparks engineer, said: "We see thousands of homes wasting broadband width simply because of a poor in-home setup.
"People need to think about their broadband in the same way as other utilities such as water and electricity - it's a commodity that can go to waste if you're not careful."
The research found that the most common reason why households are having to endure reduced broadband speeds is poor wiring. Engineers discovered the second main offender is the internet router, with this often needing to be either set up or reconfigured.
People wishing to alleviate these risks could do so by opting instead for the satellite broadband service delivered by Avonline. The installation of this is much easier than other broadband types - it simply requires a small satellite at the property, as opposed to cables being laid underground.
This service is ideal for people living in rural parts of the UK and is available immediately. It could be a suitable alternative for individuals who have been frustrated by the various delays that have pushed back the government's broadband programme that aims to improve connections for homes and businesses located in the countryside and away from large built-up areas.
