Broadband investment will be a crucial driver of growth in European countries over the coming years as long as governments support infrastructure plans and innovative internet solutions, according to European Commission (EC) vice-president Neelie Kroos.

Speaking at the Broadband World Forum in Amsterdam, she explained that good internet access through means such as satellite broadband can have a major impact on economic expansion.

"The wider social and economic benefits are huge. It means more growth, more jobs and a more competitive economy," said Ms Kroos.

However, she warned that governments need to take the process seriously and ensure that it is allowed to grow if broadband is to reach its full potential in Europe.

"Everyone relies in some way on digital technology and fast connections," concluded the EC chief.

The coalition government has claimed the UK will have the best broadband network in Europe by 2020 as it continues to invest in improving access across the country.
