Close to three-quarters of British adults access the internet on a daily basis, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed 73 per cent of people aged 16 and above go online at least once every 24 hours.

This equates to 36 million adults, which is an increase of 20 million compared to 2006.

According to the ONS, 83 per cent of households have internet access, while 72 per cent of internet users have bought goods or services online, compared to just 53 per cent in 2008.

However, the most common activity is sending emails, which has been undertaken by 75 per cent of people.

Just over half (53 per cent) of the internet users surveyed said they log on to social networking websites, while a similar number (55 per cent) access the web to read news and magazines.
