The government needs to speed up its plans to rollout super-fast internet and make the most of technology such as satellite broadband, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).
A new report from the organisation claims the UK's many rural internet "not-spots" need to be connected as soon as possible rather than having to wait for several years.
The government originally set a deadline of May 2015 for its £300 million plan to rollout super-fast broadband to 90 per cent of homes in the country. However, there are now concerns the project could drag on for an extra two years.
Katja Hall, CBI chief policy director, commented: "Broader, faster digital networks are revolutionising how society and business operate, just as the Victorian rail and electrification systems transformed the world in the 1800s."
She added: "Digital policy is not an optional add-on, it’s central to fuelling long-term growth through inward investment, job creation and exports."
Ms Hall said this means it is imperative the government closes the divide between rural and urban broadband and provides the countryside with the fast and reliable connections many city dwellers take for granted.
The CBI believes the coalition should make the most of the various technologies on the market - including fixed, mobile, wireless and satellite - to ensure high quality internet services are widely available as soon as possible.
It also warned the UK cannot afford to be complacent and even though it is currently the world's largest online retail market, a number of international competitors are catching up.
The organisation made several other recommendations on how the government can improve connectivity faster, such as revising the national infrastructure plan, encouraging more small businesses to go online and creating robust partnerships within the digital industry.
If you're concerned about how long the government rollout will take to reach your area, why not opt for Avonline satellite broadband instead. This technology can provide super-fast speeds, is perfect for rural areas and is available now.
