VoIP users to 'grow to nearly one billion' header image

The number of people subscribed to over-the-the top voice over IP (VoIP) services such as Skype has grown considerably in the last year.

VoIP programmes allow users to make phone calls over the internet and are becoming an increasingly popular way for people to contact one another.

Recent statistics from Infonetics Research show the number of individuals subscribed to this software has increased by more than 550 per cent to over 640 million since the start of 2012.

The organisation believes this figure will reach the one billion mark before the end of 2013.

Skype is by far the most popular VoIP programme and accounted for 40 per cent of all active users last year.

However, Diane Myers of Infonetics Research said a number of other applications such as Fring, WeChat and Line are gaining larger customer bases.

Having access to VoIP services such as Skype is one of the benefits of upgrading to Avonline satellite broadband.
