The amount Britons spent online increased in June, according to new research.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics show the average weekly outlay was £586.9 million, which represents an increase of 18.3 per cent on the same period last year.
Online spending now accounts for just under ten per cent of all retail sales, excluding fuel purchases.
Non-store retailing with companies such as Amazon rose by 24 per cent compared to 2012 and 66 per cent of this type of transaction is now carried out on the web.
The biggest growth was in department store sales, which rose by over a third (35.2 per cent).
People are buying more food online, with this type of transaction increasing by around 17 per cent. The internet now accounts for 3.3 per cent of total sales in this area.
