Sainsbury’s has announced its online grocery sales are now fast-approaching £1 billion a year, with orders regularly topping 190,000 a week.
This comes as the supermarket reported a 4.5 per cent increase in revenues, excluding VAT but including fuel, to £23.30 billion in the 12 months to March 16th, up from £22.29 billion the previous year. These revenues have been given a boost by the growing number of people taking to the internet to order their groceries.
The company's online sales continue to grow at a rate of 20 per cent a year and this area has become an important element to its business strategy.
Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King said the supermarket's investment in complementary channels and services continues to deliver.
“The amount customers spend more than doubles when they shop in our supermarkets, convenience stores and online," he added.
Sainsbury's market share has now grown to 16.8 per cent, its highest for a decade.
