The state-supported rollout of super-fast broadband in Cumbria may be delayed as it awaits EU approval.
Cumbria County Council was hoping for work on the Connecting Cumbria project to begin this spring, but is still waiting for the EU to provide its official go-ahead for the scheme.
Funding for the rollout of super-fast broadband in the county was originally allocated in 2010 and BT signed the contract to carry out the work through the Broadband Delivery UK initiative (BDUK) in November 2012.
Council officers have submitted plans to Brussels and answered questions about the scheme, but have been left frustrated after being told they must now wait for "major project approval" before work can begin, in-cumbria reports.
Despite these concerns, a spokesperson for the council told TechWeekEurope it still believes it can meet its deadline of supplying super-fast broadband to 93 per cent of premises within the county by the end of 2015.
“The current situation is that we would have anticipated by now to have had the necessary European approvals.
“As yet we haven’t got the final approval, but we do not anticipate it will affect the project end date,” they stated.
According to TechWeek, the project has already been signed off once by the EU, but requires a second approval due to the large scale of the rollout and the fact it is being carried out by just one supplier.
“The situation as it currently stands is that we don’t have a firm date for this final approval.
"All our submissions have been made and it is the process of being approved. It is a procedural situation and we are awaiting the end of the procedure to make the contract live," the spokesperson stated.
In December last year, the EU gave permission for the BDUK scheme to go ahead after concerns were raised about a lack of competition.
If you live in Cumbria and are concerned about when you will receive a high-speed internet connection, why not try satellite broadband? Avonline provides a fast and reliable service, which is ideal for rural areas and installation is normally complete within two weeks of an order being placed.
