The number of mobile devices connected to the internet will exceed the world's population this year, according to a new report by Cisco.
The networking organisation has released a forecast for global mobile traffic that analyses statistics from last year and predicts trends that will occur in 2013.
It found the number of tablets connected to the mobile network more than doubled in 2012, growing to 36 million, while 121 million laptops were also connected.
Average smartphone use increased dramatically, rising by 81 per cent. The typical consumer used 342 MB of traffic per month, compared to 189 MB in 2011.
To cater for this rise in the number of devices, the report predicted that mobile connection speeds will increase sevenfold between 2012 and 2017.
The report also found that mobile internet use grew by 70 per cent in 2012 and was nearly 12 times higher than in 2000.
