Slow broadband speeds are alleged to have cost businesses in Brentwood over £100,000.
Companies based on the Hutton industrial estate in the Essex town say BT has refused to improve their connection, despite it falling short of the advertised standards, the Brentwood Gazette reports.
Local business Schwartz Printing claims its download speed runs at no more than 1.6 Mbp/s, even though it should be receiving a 20 Mbp/s service.
Chris Futcher, the company's owner, said it has lost work due to clients being unhappy with the amount of time it takes to download a file.
He claims to have spoken with BT on numerous occasions to try to resolve the issue. However, the organisation has only offered to connect the company direct to the exchange in Brentwood at a cost of £8,000 per year.
A spokesperson for BT said: "We have carried out extensive surveys with regards to the cabinet that serves the industrial estate, and it is not commercially viable to us to deploy alone."
