Technological advances have made ecommerce a crucial part of the retail sector and a growing number of customers are using the web to make purchases, one expert has noted.

Editor of Retail Gazette Ben Sillitoe explained outlets such as Asos, Amazon and eBay are proving popular with shoppers, who are increasingly making use of satellite broadband and other high-speed fixed and mobile connections to buy items.

"Eretail is very much driving the retail industry at the moment," he said, adding "all retailers" are looking to develop their multichannel capabilities in order to increase their online presence.

"That is where the consumer is and these are the platforms where the consumer wants to shop," he concluded.

Shopping online can lead to savings for buyers, however a reliable internet connection is crucial for making purchases over the web.

Marzena Lipman of Consumer Focus recently called on the government to make sure broadband is available to all residents, regardless of whether they live in a rural location.
