Internet-savvy British consumers spent more than £1 billion on downloaded media over the festive period, a record high for sales of this kind and an 11.4 per cent jump from 2011.
A quarter of the entertainment market is now digital, meaning consumers with poor ADSL connections may find themselves increasingly isolated from the cultural world.
Kim Bayley, director general of the Entertainment Retailers Association, described the record-breaking performance as an "incredible achievement" for the UK's array of multichannel and online-only retailers.
This "reflects their huge investment in new and innovative services which means you can buy music, video and games literally at any time of the day and wherever you are", she added.
The biggest sector for digital sales remains videogames, which accounted for £552.2 million of the market, more than video and music combined.
Although Amazon has come in for criticism over the recent tax avoidance scandal, it also topped ForeSee's report on the best customer service provided by online retailers.
