A Royal Mail report has suggested online retail is set to become even more popular among consumers over the course of 2013 as businesses tailor their offering to meet consumer demand.
Despite the market becoming more competitive, just over half of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) saw a boost in online sales in 2012.
Furthermore, two-thirds anticipate a jump in the number of people purchasing online over the next 12 months.
One factor behind this is increased innovation in the sector - 35 per cent of SMEs are planning to develop mobile apps, while ten per cent have already done so.
Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: "Our study shows that online retailers are responding to the needs of shoppers to grow sales in an increasingly competitive marketplace."
Kim Bayley, director of the Entertainment Retailers Association, recently revealed that digital downloads topped £1 billion over the festive period.
With online retail becoming increasing engrained, companies with poor ADSL connections could find themselves falling behind.
