Broadband 'not an optional extra' header image

Internet access should be treated as a necessity rather than an optional extra, an expert has claimed.

Trade body the Mobile Operators Association, which represents EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, responded to the recent report from Policy Exchange by suggesting that more needs to be done to ensure poor ADSL connections across the UK are improved.

Executive director John Cooke told Mobile Today that internet access is now vital for businesses and individuals, as well as playing a major role in the provision of public services.

"We are particularly pleased that the report calls on government to clear the way for the roll out of next generation networks" he added.

A growing number of people are using smartphones and tablets to get online, with a 4G rollout currently underway.

The Policy Exchange report also suggested that it is important the government focuses on overall coverage rather than concentrating on headline-grabbing but ultimately insignificant top speeds.
