Online retail experienced considerable growth over the recent Christmas period, according to research by IBM.
The sector delivered a sales increase of 16.4 per cent in December 2012, compared to the same month in 2011.
Boxing Day sales demonstrated the greatest rise, increasing by 45 per cent.
There was also strong growth in November, with sales 13.7 per cent higher than the previous year.
The increasing importance of mobile devices was apparent, as mobile internet accounted for a quarter of total traffic and a third of traffic on Christmas Day.
Sales from mobile devices made up 20 per cent of total sales figures.
The iPad proved the most popular product, with sales growing by more than 200 per cent in November.
Chris Withers, IBM's head of UK smarter commerce, said: “The report suggests this was the year of the iPad, not just as a device for shopping and browsing retail websites, but also as the gift of choice on Christmas Day."
