These days, a lot of companies offer an option of paperless billing if you use services on an ongoing contract. This means that the practice is increasingly popular with utility companies, as well as phone and internet providers.
Simply put, the practice involves allowing you to view your bill on a password-protected webpage, rather than having it sent to you through the post. Once signed up, your provider will send you an email to let you know when your bill is available, and you can then log in to see it on their website. If you’re trying to work out if this is something that could work for you, here are a few things to consider:
Firstly, paperless billing can save you a little bit of money. While this isn’t the case for all companies, some are prepared to offer you a small discount to reflect the money that they are able to save on stationery and postage. This generally isn’t much, but it can be a nice gesture, particularly if money is tight or you’re saving for something special.
Less paper printed out and fewer envelopes tossed in the bin can be a big win for the planet. Paperless billing is largely regarded as the most environmentally friendly option, as it cuts down on the amount of paper required, much of which can end up in landfill.
However, this isn’t the only advantage of less paper when it comes to your regular bills. If you opt for paperless billing, you won’t have to worry about how to file it all safely: a major concern for anyone who is anything less than perfectly organised, as well as those with limited space. You also don’t have to worry about finding a crucial bill again if you need it, as most companies will allow you to view all of your bills going back for at least several years.
Of course, if you prefer searching through filing cabinets instead of dealing with a page on a website, then you can always print off your bills and store them the old-fashioned way if you decide you don’t like it, or need to show a bill as proof of address or identity.
In short, paperless billing is a great way to manage your utility bills and other ongoing contracts, and can be a small, but real, boost to the environment, your filing space and even your wallet.
