Sick of staring at your computer screen waiting for a snail-paced web page to load? Maybe you're trying to stream some TV and get about ten seconds of footage before the buffering wheel pops up for five minutes - whatever the problem we know that slow and unreliable broadband can be maddening.

So, what can you do to overcome problems like this? We make a few suggestions below.

Who and what?

If your broadband is struggling, one of the first things to think about is who is using it and what are they doing? If four members of the family are all trying to stream video content or download files at the same there, is a chance this could be slowing things down. The best course of action is to speak to your family or housemates and see if the root of the problem can be traced back to any one person or particular action.

Another possibility is that your broadband is being slowed down by outside use. If your network is not password protected, anyone within range of the router can connect to it. This means your neighbours could theoretically use your broadband without paying a penny.  As a result, it's vital to ensure you set up a password to make sure only your household can get online through your network.

Tech problems

The device you are using to go online could also be playing a part in broadband problems. An old and slow computer may struggle with tasks like online streaming or gaming. Meanwhile, a computer's performance can be massively slowed down if it gets infected by viruses and malware.

Think about whether it might be time for a computer upgrade and make sure you have some form of anti-virus software installed to keep you protected.

Change provider

In many cases, broadband problems are down to the company providing your service. Maybe you have an old-fashioned connection that hasn't been updated, or perhaps a faster service simply isn't available in the area.

If you think you fall into the latter category, there is an alternative. Satellite broadband can bring fast and reliable broadband to areas where other technologies, such as fibre optic cannot reach. This makes it an ideal option for those people who stand to miss out on the government and BT's super-fast rollout.
